WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA freshman left-hander Gavin Brooks captured Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of May 21-27, the conference announced Tuesday. Brooks earned his first Pac-10 weekly award after throwing his first collegiate complete game Sunday, May 27, in the Bruins' 5-2 victory over defending national champion Oregon State in UCLA's final regular-season game.

Brooks' complete game handed the Bruins their 30th victory of the season and helped UCLA seal a berth in the NCAA Long Beach Regional. The Vista, Calif., resident struck out seven hitters and issued just one walk through nine innings. Brooks limited the visiting Beavers to two runs (one earned) and three hits.

The freshman left-hander opened his outing with 4 2/3 no-hit innings and retired 13 consecutive batters in the second through fifth innings. Brooks has recorded 79 strikeouts in 93 2/3 innings this season, posting a 5-6 record and a 5.09 ERA.

UCLA has earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors four times this season, as senior Tyson Brummett has gained the award three times. Overall, the Bruins have claimed Pac-10 weekly honors six times.

The No. 2-seeded Bruins (30-26) return to action Friday, June 1, against No. 3 seed Pepperdine in the NCAA Long Beach Regional. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. at Long Beach State's Blair Field.
