Kerr Pitching and Yudin Clutch Hit Send #5 UCLA to Win Over Top-Ranked Washington

April 1, 2010

Box Score

SEATTLE, Wash. - Junior Donna Kerr struck out eight in a four-hit shutout and sophomore Dani Yudin delivered the clutch hit with a two-out, RBI single in the sixth inning, as the fifth-ranked Bruins opened their Pac-10 season with a 1-0 victory over top-ranked Washington on Thursday at the Husky Softball Stadium.

The short-handed Bruins, playing without injured starters Andrea and Monica Harrison, Megan Langenfeld and Katie Schroeder, won their 13th in a row to improve to 27-4 overall. The Huskies fall to 28-3 with the loss.

Yudin and freshman Devon Lindvall each had two hits, combining for four of the Bruins' five hits. Freshman Charlotte Dolan had the other base knock on a single.

Kerr improved to 13-1 on the season with the win. She retired the side in order in the third and sixth innings, fanning a pair in the third, fifth and seventh frames.

The Bruins had their first good chance in the top of the second when Yudin and Dolan had back-to-back singles to left with one out. But Washington pitcher Danielle Lawrie struck out senior Kaila Shull and sophomore Marti Reed to end the inning.

A pair of doubles by Lindvall in the third and fifth gave the Bruins a pair of runners in scoring position, but they were unable to crack the scoreboard. In the third, the freshman led off the frame with a double to right-center, but with freshman B.B. Bates at the plate, Lindvall was caught too far off the second-base bag following a pitch in the dirt and got picked off by UW catcher Shawna Wright. In the fifth, Lindvall had a two-out double down the left-field line, but Lawrie fanned Bates to end the threat.

The Huskies had a runner at third with two outs in the bottom of the first following a two-out bunt single by Jenn Salling, who also stole second and advanced to third on an error. But Kerr induced Lawrie into a pop up to short to end the inning.

In the fourth, Salling was at first following a leadoff walk and Niki Williams put a scare into the Bruins with a deep fly ball to center, but with her back against the wall 220 feet away from home plate, Lindvall made the catch to keep the Huskies off the board.

The Bruins broke the scoreless tie with a two-out run in the sixth. Sophomore Samantha Camuso started the inning with a walk and was pinch-run for by junior Grace Murray, who moved to second on a sacrifice by junior GiOnna DiSalvatore and to third on a groundout by senior Julie Burney. Yudin then came through in the clutch, singling through the right side on a 3-2 pitch to put the Bruins up 1-0.

UCLA had a chance to extend its lead in the seventh, but left the bases loaded. With one out, Reed and Lindvall drew consecutive walks and Bates reached on a fielder's choice when Salling failed to hold on to a throw at third base from Lawrie on a ball hit back to the circle. But Lawrie got Camuso on a strikeout and DiSalvatore on a groundout to end the inning.

The Huskies made things interesting in the seventh, but the Bruins held on for the victory with a wild ending. Williams singled to left to start the inning, and one out later, Hooch Fagaly walked and was pinch-run for by Bailey Stenson. After Kerr struck out pinch-hitter Jenna Clifton for the second out of the inning, Amanda Fleischman reached on an infield single to second to load the bases. Kimi Pohlman then grounded a ball to shortstop, but Stenson collided with DiSalvatore in the base path. Runner's interference was called on Stenson for the final out, as the Bruins celebrated and the Huskies argued with the umpiring crew.

The Bruins continue their three-game series with the Huskies on Friday at 6 p.m. Gametracker and live audio will be available at UCLABruins.com.
