LOS ANGELES - Junior Tyler Jemmett scored a season-high three goals to pace the No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team past Bucknell, 13-6, Saturday morning in both teams' opening matches of the 2008 SoCal Tournament at Loyola Marymount's Burns Aquatics Center.
UCLA led throughout the contest, as Murphy scored the game's first goal with 3:16 remaining in the first quarter. Bucknell (8-8) tied the contest twice in the first period - at 1-1 and 2-2 - before the Bruins pulled ahead, outscoring the Bisons by a 3-1 margin in each of the second and third quarters.
Sophomore Ben Hohl scored a power-play goal 75 seconds into the second quarter, handing UCLA a 3-2 lead, one the Bruins would not relinquish. UCLA led 5-3 at halftime 8-4 after three quarters.
UCLA cemented its victory with five fourth-quarter goals, including two from Jemmett, who tied his career high with three goals (also scored three against Pacific in the MPSF Tournament on Nov. 24, 2006).
The Bruins also received one goal each from seniors Krsto Sbutega and Russell Simpkins and freshmen Cullen Hennessy, Brett Hays and Matt Preciado. The goal by Preciado marked his first collegiate score.
Richie Hyden and Randy Ang led Bucknell with two goals each. Goalkeepers Nick Donahue and Miles Gilhuly each logged three saves for the Bisons.
No. 2 UCLA will face No. 9 UC San Diego at 2:40 p.m. on Saturday at LMU's Burns Aquatic Center.
