The sixth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (9-2) heads across town this week to face two-time defending NCAA Champion No. 7 USC (9-2) on Wednesday at the Marks Tennis Stadium beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Bruins are hoping for a similar outcome to last year's showdown at USC, when the Bruins clinched a 4-3 upset over the Trojans courtesy of Maxime Tabatruong's three-set victory at No. 6 singles. UCLA leads the all-time series between the two teams 69-36. Live stats and video for Wednesday's match is available on the USC website by clicking HERE. This week's UCLA-USC encounter will not count towards the Pac-10 standings, as the designated conference match between these two teams will take place on April 22 at UCLA.
The Bruins are coming off just their second loss of the season after falling 5-2 to then-No. 20 Cal on Saturday. After dropping the doubles point, UCLA's Adrien Puget (court No. 5) and Clay Thompson (court No. 3) were the only Bruin players to win singles matches. UCLA was supposed to play Stanford last Friday, however that match was canceled due to rain and will not be made up due to the fact that it was not a Pac-10-counting match.
Despite losing to Cal last week, the Bruins slipped only one spot in this week's ITA Team Rankings released on Tuesday, falling from No. 5 to No. 6. Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio State, Illinois and Texas are the teams ranked ahead of UCLA. In addition to the team rankings, individual rankings were also released on Tuesday. The Bruins have four players ranked in singles, led by No. 43 Daniel Kosakowski. He is followed by No. 99 Clay Thompson, who makes his debut in the rankings this week, and No. 108 Maxime Tabatruong. In doubles, Alex Brigham and Amit Inbar are ranked No. 47. For a complete listing of this week's ITA Rankings, click HERE.
Following this Wednesday's USC encounter, the Bruins will head to La Jolla, Calif. for the 122nd Pacific Coast Doubles Championships, March 3-6 at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. The tournament is an open event and features former collegiate players, current collegiate players, former professionals and even highly-ranked juniors. It is not an ITA sanctioned event. The Bruins are sending three teams to La Jolla. Click HERE to see the complete draw.
The No. 17 UCLA women's tennis team (7-4) has two home matches on tap this week beginning with No. 15 USC (7-1) on Wednesday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Bruins swept the Women of Troy last season, winning 4-3 at USC on March 3 and 6-1 at the LATC on April 16. Wednesday's match will not count in the Pac-10 standings. The Pac-10-counting match between the two teams will be on April 15 at USC. UCLA, however, officially opens up the conference season this Saturday, hosting No. 20 Washington (8-4) at 1:30 p.m. Live stats for both of this week's matches can be accessed by clicking HERE.
Wednesday's UCLA-USC encounter is one of the designated marketing events for the year. Free pizza will be given out to the first 100 fans in attendance. In addition, there will be a Bruin Raffle and Bruin Trivia Contest where fans will have the opportunity to win prizes that will be given out between singles and doubles. The UCLA Band will also be in attendance.
The Bruins have not played a dual match since falling to No. 3 Baylor at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors on Feb. 20 in Charlottesville, Va. UCLA was supposed to face Pepperdine last week, however that match was postponed due to rain. It has been rescheduled for April 13 in Malibu. Despite not playing a match last week, the Bruins fell from No. 11 to No. 17 in the latest ITA Team Rankings released on Tuesday. Individual rankings were also released for the first time since Feb. 14. Senior Andrea Remynse is the highest ranked UCLA singles player at No. 64. She is followed by No. 73 McCall Jones, No. 119 Carling Seguso and No. 121 Courtney Dolehide. Three Bruin doubles teams are ranked led by Dolehide and Remynse at No. 14. Jones is part of the other two teams that are ranked, as she checks in at No. 38 with Pamela Montez and at No. 41 with Maya Johansson. The latest ITA Rankings can be found HERE.
