Stanford, Calif. - UCLA tennis player Daniel Kosakowski booked a spot in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships on Wednesday, notching a straight-set opening-round win at Stanford's Taube Tennis Stadium.
Kosakowski, who is currently ranked No. 37 in the ITA Singles Rankings, downed 61st-ranked Artem Ilyushin of Mississippi State, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. Next up is a showdown with top-seeded Steve Johnson of USC in the second round on Thursday. It will mark the fourth meeting between the two players this season, with Johnson winning the previous three encounters. Thursday's match time has not yet been announced.
On the women's side, junior McCall Jones suffered a first-round loss, as she was beaten 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 by Notre Dame's Shannon Mathews. The two players are listed just one place apart in the current ITA Rankings, with Mathews checking in at No. 56 nationally and Jones at No. 57.
Two UCLA men's players received some good news on Wednesday, as Alex Brigham and Adrien Puget were accepted to the 32-team doubles draw in Stanford. The Bruin tandem was the first alternate and was inserted into the draw when another team pulled out. They will face Michigan's Jason Jung and Evan King on Thursday.
