No. 5 UCLA Downs St. Mary's 5-2 in Season Opener

Jan. 19, 2011

LOS ANGELES - The fifth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team started the dual-match season on a positive note on Wednesday, registering a 5-2 victory over St. Mary's in the season opener for both teams at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Despite suffering an uncharacteristic, one-sided loss at the No. 1 doubles, the Bruins still managed to take the point, posting wins at court Nos. 2 and 3. Maya Johansson and McCall Jones, fresh off a finals appearance at the Freeman Memorial Championships in Las Vegas last week, continued their winning ways on Wednesday, clinching the point with an 8-4 victory over Alita Fisher/Jenny Jullien at court No. 3.

"I think we came out a little flat in the beginning of doubles," said Stella Sampras Webster, who is in her 15th season as head coach at UCLA. "But our teams at courts 2 and 3 really got it together and played quite well to dominate those sets."

Despite the rather close 5-2 final score, the Bruins actually enjoyed a 5-0 lead in Wednesday's match after taking three quick wins in singles, as Andrea Remynse (court No. 4), Carling Seguso (court No. 6) and Pamela Montez (court No. 3) were all victorious in straight-sets. Remynse turned in the most impressive score of the day, notching a 6-0, 6-0 win over Anna Chkhikvishvili.

BYU transfer McCall Jones was also a straight-set winner in her first dual match as a Bruin, as she outlasted 85th-ranked Alex Poorta, 6-4, 6-1 at court No. 1.

St. Mary's picked up its two points on the day with singles wins at court Nos. 2 and 5.

"St. Mary's is a strong team and is going to win a lot of matches," added Sampras Webster. "In fact, it's probably one of the toughest openers that we've ever had. I thought today was a good experience for our players and a nice team win to start the year."

UCLA returns to action next Wednesday, hosting Loyola Marymount at 1:30 p.m.
