LOS ANGELES - UCLA outfielder Gabe Cohen has been rated the sixth-best returning sophomore in college baseball by Rivals.com, as announced this week by the national collegiate sports website. Cohen earned 2007 Pac-10 Co-Newcomer of the Year honors as a freshman after hitting .345 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI in 56 games.
Cohen captured Freshman All-America first-team honors from Rivals.com, Baseball America and Ping!Baseball in June after having guided UCLA to its first NCAA Super Regional appearance since 2000. The right-handed slugger became just the eighth Bruin in school history to have earned Freshman All-America first-team honors from Baseball America.
Cohen's totals of 10 home runs and 36 RBI were the highest marks by a UCLA freshman since Wes Whisler tallied 18 homers and 46 RBI in 2002. The Woodland Hills, Calif., resident recorded 19 multi-hit games, the third highest total on the club, and chipped in with nine multi-RBI efforts.
Rounding out the top five of Rivals.com's list of top returning sophomores includes first baseman Dustin Ackley (North Carolina) and pitchers Ryan Berry (Rice), Mike Minor (Vanderbilt), Mike Leake (Arizona State) and Eric Erickson (Miami).
