ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Junior KK Clark scored a game-high four goals and senior Grace Reynolds added three to lead the No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team past No. 14 Hartwick, 17-3, in a non-conference game at the Michigan Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
UCLA (2-0) was in firm control for the entire contest, securing their second victory of the day. The Bruins defeated Colorado State, 15-6, in their season-opening game that morning.
"I thought that we did a great job on the counterattack in both games today," second-year head coach Brandon Brooks said. "Against Hartwick, I really liked how we maintained our momentum. We played with a high energy through all four quarters."
UCLA raced to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter and used a 4-1 scoring run in the second period to lead, 10-2, at halftime. The Bruins continued their offensive assault in the third quarter, blanking the Hawks 3-0 in that period before outscoring Hartwick, 3-1, in the final frame.
Seniors Kelly Easterday and Priscilla Orozco each registered two goals in the victory. UCLA also received one goal from senior Katie Estrada, juniors Hannah Sebenaler and Sarah Orozco, sophomores Emily Greenwood and Brooke Martin and freshman Becca Dorst.
Hartwick was led by Sami Capparelli's two goals and received one from Jessica McKee.
UCLA junior goalkeeper Caitlin Dement made 10 saves in her first game of the season. Hartwick's Jessica Dorman made five stops in the cage.
"I thought we played with a lot more maturity today than last year's team did," Brooks said. "I was really pleased with our enthusiasm and effort. It was great to see KK finish the day with six goals. We want to get some scoring from her, and she did a fantastic job getting involved. Priscilla stepped up big for us, too, scoring four goals and adding several assists. Her passing was excellent today."
The Bruins continue round-robin play at the Michigan Invitational on Sunday. UCLA faces Michigan in a televised game (Big Ten Network) at 8 a.m. (PT). The Bruins will take on Cal State Northridge at 12:50 p.m. (PT).
"We've got a tough game against a quality opponent in their venue on TV tomorrow, so we know we're going to have our hands full," Brooks said. "We are definitely looking forward to the opportunity."
