LOS ANGELES - The No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team opened a 5-1 first-quarter lead and held on for the victory, defeating No. 14 Pacific, 11-7, on Sunday afternoon at the Bruins' Spieker Aquatics Center.
Pacific (12-10, 0-3 MPSF) received a game-high three goals from Joey Gullikson and two goals from Goran Tomasevic.
The Bruins opened the conference contest on a 4-0 scoring run, receiving goals from Hays (7:16), freshman Griffin White (6:35), sophomore Cullen Hennessy (4:54) and junior Emilio Vieira (4:21). Pacific answered with their first goal of the afternoon, a strike from Gullikson with 2:25 to play in the first quarter. UCLA led 5-1 after one quarter following a goal from Samuels with 68 seconds remaining in the period.
Pacific reduced the Bruins' advantage to 5-2 with one goal from Tom Koning in the second quarter.
UCLA outscored the visiting Tigers by a 4-2 margin in the third quarter to assume a 9-4 lead. Davidson opened the second half scoring back-to-back goals within 80 seconds (7:45, 6:25), pushing the Bruins' cushion to 7-2. Pacific got as close as three goals, trailing 7-4, after two goals from Tomasevic (6:13, 4:38).
The Bruins maintained at least a four-goal lead throughout the final quarter, closing the contest with an 11-7 advantage. Freshman goalkeeper Matt Rapacz registered five saves and allowed four goals through the first three quarters and 2:10 of the final frame. Sophomore Andrew Mesesan netted two saves, allowing three goals in the final 5:50 of the fourth quarter.
Pacific's Tomislav Bujas made one stop as the starting goalkeeper. David Andrus netted five saves in relief, playing in goal through the final three quarters.
