The Bruins perfect season was spoiled last Friday night as Stanford pulled out a five-game win over UCLA in Pauley Pavilion. UCLA now regroups for a critical Lexus Gauntlet match-up with No. 5 USC. The winner of the match has a chance to remain tied with Stanford for the top spot in the Pac-10 standings, while the loser will fall into a tie for third place. Although the Women of Troy opened the school's Galen Center last Thursday, the Bruins will travel to the Lyon Center for Friday night's match because of a scheduling conflict. It will be the final women's volleyball match held at the Lyon Center. This will be UCLA's sixth match of the season against a team ranked in the AVCA Top-10 at the time of the match.

The Lexus Gauntlet: UCLA vs. USC
Friday's match will assign the first five women's volleyball points for the 2006-07 athletic year. The Gauntlet standings are currently tied after USC men's water polo won a Sept. 17 meeting and the Bruins women's soccer team defeated the Women of Troy in overtime on Sunday at USC. USC won the award last year (2005-06). There are a total of 110 points available, distributed over 18 sports. For more information on the Lexus Gauntlet, visit www.gauntlettrophy.com

Banachowski Leads Bruins For 40th Season
A dramatic five-game upset win over then-undefeated Washington on Nov. 12, 2005, made UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski the first women's Division I volleyball coach to win 1,000 career matches. Banachowski, who holds a career record of 1,024-267 (.793), is in his 40th season on the Bruin bench. He trails only UCLA men's coach Al Scates and Juniata (Div. III) head women's coach Larry Bock (1,069 entering 2006) for wins by a collegiate volleyball coach.

Banachowski was an All-America setter for Scates during his collegiate career at UCLA. (Scates holds a career record of 1135-212.) The first women's volleyball coach to be inducted into the National Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, Mass., Banachowski has coached the Bruins to six national championships, including three NCAA titles (1984, `90, `91).
