Karina Silva returned to her home country over the weekend to compete at the Spanish National Diving Championships and came away with a spot in the Madrid Grand Prix and European Championships.
Silva, who hails from Madrid, had a huge weekend as she won the Platform and 3M Synchro competitions in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games diving complex. She also placed third on 1M and just missed the podium for 3M with a fourth-place finish. With her finish at this meet, she qualifies to compete at the Madrid Grand Prix, held July 9-11 at her club team's home pool in Madrid. She also qualified via point standard for a spot at the European Championships on platform, held August 9-15 in Budapest, Hungary.
Laura Winn was also in Barcelona competing alongside Silva and had a solid competition as well. She was sixth on both springboard events and second on platform after the prelim round (she was pulled from the final and did not finish the competition).
"I am really pleased with where we are at," said dive coach Tom Stebbins. "This was a great warm-up for Laura's summer season and a very good way for Karina to kick off her summer European tour.
Winn and sophomore-to-be Michelle Vale will next compete at the Senior Zone meet in Mission Viejo, CA July 9-11. The top five divers in each event will advance to the summer Senior National Championships, which is held in College Station, TX August 10-15.
