NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team advanced to the semifinals of the UC Irvine Invitational with a 7-5 victory over No. 5 Michigan on Saturday afternoon at Corona del Mar High School. Juniors Priscilla Orozco and Grace Reynolds led the Bruins (11-3) with two goals each.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Dement registered nine saves in the cage for UCLA.
Michigan (12-4) was led by a three-goal effort from Kiki Golden. Wolverines goalkeeper Morgan Turner made six stops in the first three quarters, and Brittany May totaled three saves in the fourth quarter.
The Bruins led from the start, securing a 2-0 lead after the first quarter. UCLA outscored Michigan, 2-1, in the second half to lead 4-1 at halftime. The Bruins expanded their advantage to 7-2 through three quarters and held off a fourth-quarter rally by Michigan to win, 7-5.
The semifinal victory pits UCLA against No. 1 Stanford in a semifinal contest on Sunday, Feb. 28. Game time at UC Irvine is slated for 10:30 a.m. The Bruins and Cardinal have not faced each other this season.
