LOS ANGELES - The UCLA baseball program has received a National Letter of Intent from Dean Espy, as announced Friday by UCLA head coach John Savage. Espy starred as a freshman in 2009 at South Mountain Community College (Phoenix) and will enroll at UCLA in the fall of 2009.

Espy, a 6-foot-1 infielder from Mesa, Ariz., batted .361 in 60 season games for South Mountain CC in 2009. He earned second-team NJCAA All-Region I honors and secured second-team all-conference accolades.

Espy finished the 2009 season ranking sixth with 70 hits and third with seven triples in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC). He totaled three home runs, 16 doubles, 40 RBI and 36 runs and posted a .425 on-base percentage for the Cougars.

"Dean is a very complete player who has plenty of experience," Savage said. "He should be able to come into our program and be a major contributor right away."

Selected in the 41st round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies, Espy excelled as a junior (2007) and senior (2008) at Red Mountain High School. He batted .476 with six homers, one triple, 14 doubles, 30 RBI and 49 runs as a senior, collecting 21 walks and just six strikeouts. Espy was named a 2008 Louisville Slugger first-team preseason All-America selection.

Espy batted .588 with 33 RBI as a junior at Red Mountain before earning first-team Class 5A All-Tribune accolades from the East Valley Tribune (Scottsdale).
