Recap |  Final Stats |  Notes

UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell
(opening statement)
"This last month has been a tough month for us as a team, and it was good to get back in the win column against a very good team today. I felt our defense stepped up to the challenge of slowing down their offense, which has been successful the last few weeks. Our offense did a nice job converting turnovers into points. It was a good team effort. It wasn't the prettiest of wins, but given the circumstances of us losing four in a row, getting a win under our belt felt good. We played hard, but we didn't play smart, and I'm concerned about that. Penalties blemished the victory, but I'm pleased with the team. Offensively, we had some good times throughout the game. It was nice to see us score on the first play of the third quarter, and it was nice to get a big play after forcing a turnover, on the deep pass to Marcus Everett."

"The biggest thing I'm disappointed in is the penalties. I'm not pleased. That's not our style; that's never been our style. That's not the style of play I'm ever excited about. I let the team know that right away. We still have two games to go. It was great to get this win, but we still have a lot of work to do. We have a lot to build upon but also a lot of things to correct."

(on the first touchdown in the third quarter)
"It was a big momentum change for us. We hadn't tested their defense on deep throws in the first half, and we just took a shot. Our defense did a great job on the fourth down stop, and for us to turn around and make a big play after that was huge. It was good to see a great throw, great catch and great coverage by our team."

(about talking to the team about closing in the second half)
"We sure did (talk about it). Part of the growing experience of our team is facing our issues up front. The more we talk about it and harp on it and work to try to get better, it's bound to happen where you have that type of success. We came back from the Cal game knowing we could have played a much better game than the one that unfolded. We played hard but made mistakes. In this game, we took positives from that and kept fighting through it. It was nice to see on our first series in the second half, stopping the critical fourth down. To see that, it's a huge step in the direction we needed to go."

(asked if Patrick Cowan was shaky in the first half)
"He was (shaky), particularly late in the second quarter. We settled him down at halftime, worked him through the game, lined up list of plays we wanted to call in second half. When he hit that first pass in the second half, he relaxed a lot. He had some great improvisational plays for himself and got some positive yards. He made some big positive steps in this game."

(asked if Oregon State overlooked the team)
"That's not any of my concern with what they're thinking. We worked overtime on getting our players ready to play. They were on four-game win streak and didn't want to get off their train, and we were on a four-game losing streak and wanted off that train."

Oregon State head coach Mike Riley
"That was a terribly disappointing game. We've been on a good run and have been playing some good football. We just turned the ball over too many times to win. I'm surprised, disappointed and anxious to get ready for the next game. I think that we can bounce back and play better."

Oregon State quarterback Matt Moore
(on the fumbles) "The ball was squirting out. I can't explain it. That never happens. I don't know why. It just doesn't. Obviously, I didn't secure the ball the way I should have."

"Credit UCLA. They played well. They're a good football team. But we didn't play to our ability today. It hurts. They beat us, and we beat ourselves as well. We didn't execute."
