Final Stats

LOS ANGELES - Stanford's Missy Penna held 12th-ranked UCLA to just three hits as the 15th-ranked Cardinal knocked off the Bruins on Sunday afternoon, 4-1, before a standing room only crowd on senior day at Easton Stadium.

Stanford improves to 32-16-1, 7-10-1 Pac-10 while UCLA falls to 34-15, 10-8 Pac-10.

Both teams put two runners aboard in the first inning, but each failed to score. UCLA's Krista Colburn opened the bottom of the first with a five-pitch walk and Jaisa Creps was hit by the first pitch. Lisa Dodd's successful sac bunt gave UCLA runners at second and third base with one out, but Stanford third baseman Michelle Smith snared a hot shot off the bat by Jodie Legaspi to keep the runners from advancing. Megan Langenfeld flied out to right field to end the threat.

Stanford took the lead in the top of the second as Penna helped her own cause with a two-out single through the right side to score Erin Howe, who had singled to left with one out. The Cardinal added two runs in the fourth off Anjelica Selden, who entered the game in relief of Langenfeld in the third inning, as Alissa Haber's two-out, two-RBI single to right field pushed the Stanford lead to 3-0.

UCLA tallied its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth as Legaspi and Langenfeld opened the inning with singles. Kaila Shull walked with one out to load the bases and Julie Burney's infield grounder brought home Legaspi to cut the margin to 3-1. Tara Henry's infield chopper nearly got over Penna's head for what would have most likely tied the game, but the Stanford hurler made a nice defensive play and got the speedy Bruin at first base to end the inning. Stanford added a final insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Smith for the 4-1 final.

The Bruins collected just three hits with singles by Legaspi, Langenfeld and Henry. Colburn reached base in two of her three plate appearances, both via walks. Stanford's Haber went 4-for-4 with two RBIs for the Cardinal.

Langenfeld (11-2) took the loss, allowing eight hits and two runs with one walk and two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Selden allowed two hits and two runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief before Langenfeld re-entered the circle. Penna (23-9) got the win for Stanford with three hits and one run in a complete game decision.

UCLA hits the road for the final weekend of the 2007 regular season as the Bruins face Arizona on Thu., May 10, before games at Arizona State on Fri.-Sat., May 11-12. The NCAA tournament bracket announcement is scheduled for Sun., May 13.
