PRINCETON, N.J. - The No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team won both games in its second day of action at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday. The Bruins (3-0) downed No. 19 Brown, 15-5, in their first match before defeating Iona, 20-6, in the nightcap.
Senior Cole Consani led the Bruins with three goals in the victory against Brown. Senior Scott Davidson, junior Ben Hohl, sophomore Cullen Hennessy and freshman Josh Samuels each added one pair of goal against Brown.
UCLA led against the Bears from the start, securing a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. Both teams traded two goals each in the second quarter, allowing the Bruins to lead by a 5-2 margin at halftime. UCLA outscored Brown, 5-1, in the third quarter and by a 5-2 tally in the final frame.
Later in the day, UCLA scored a season-high 20 goals, the program's highest single-season goal total since defeating Santa Clara, 20-3, on Sept. 30, 2007. Freshmen Bret Lathrope and Josh Samuels each added a season-high four goals against Iona.
The Bruins also received three goals from Hennessy and two goals each from Consani and senior Tyler Jemmett. In all, 10 UCLA players scored against Iona.
UCLA claimed a 6-1 lead through the first quarter before outscoring the Gaels, 7-1, in the second period to assume a 13-2 cushion at halftime. The Bruins continued their offensive attack in the second half, outscoring Iona by a 7-4 tally.
The Bruins conclude their weekend at the Princeton Invitational on Sunday, facing Johns Hopkins at 7:30 a.m. (PT) and Bucknell at 12:30 p.m. (PT).
