LOS ANGELES - Junior Donna Kerr tossed a one-hitter and struck out eight, outdueling North Carolina's Danielle Spaulding, while senior Julie Burney's second-inning home run was all the offense UCLA needed, as the sixth-ranked Bruins defeated the 18th-ranked Tar Heels 1-0 on Wednesday at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins improve to 17-4 overall as they snap the Tar Heels' 15-game winning streak to drop them to 16-4.
UCLA scored the only run it needed in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Burney hit a 3-2 pitch over the right-field wall for her sixth home run of the season to make it 1-0.
Kerr limited the Tar Heels to just one hit, a leadoff single to Kelsey Green in the third, and a walk to improve to 8-1 on the season. She had three 1-2-3 innings in the second, fourth and fifth and also struck out two in both the first and second innings. Kerr allowed only two Tar Heels to reach second base.
Besides the Burney home run, the only other hit Spaulding allowed was a leadoff single to junior Monica Harrison in the sixth. She struck out nine and walked two.
The Bruins are off for winter quarter finals until they re-take the field on Sunday, March 21 with a doubleheader at CSU Bakersfield. First pitch is at 1 p.m. and Gametracker will be available at UCLABruins.com.
