Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Playing in front of an NCAA regular-season record 8,527 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum on Friday evening, the No. 20 UCLA women's soccer team came up just short against its cross-town rival, falling 1-0 to USC. The Bruins, who had won seven of the last eight in the series heading into Friday, fall to 9-6-1 overall and 2-3 in the Pac-10. USC improves to 9-4-3 overall and 2-2-1 in conference action.

After playing more than 85 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Women of Troy got on the board with less than five minutes left in regulation on freshman Autumn Altamirano's first goal of the season. Karter Haug had the ball near the top right corner of the box and lofted a high ball across the box to Altamirano, who was able to chest it down and one-time a high-arching ball over the out-stretched hands of Bruin goalkeeper Chante' Sandiford.

Despite controlling possession for most the evening, UCLA was never able to capitalize on its chances. The Bruins penetrated deep into Trojan territory on several occasions, however the Trojan defense was able to thwart all possible scoring opportunities. Sophomore forward Zakiya Bywaters, who made a number of nice runs to create scoring chances, led the Bruins with four shots.

Both teams finished the night with 11 shots apiece. Sandiford ended the match with three saves. UCLA still leads the all-time series with USC, 19-4-1.

The previous attendance record for an NCAA regular-season contest was 8,204 set during Texas A&M's match with North Carolina in 2006. That game was in College Station, Texas.

Next up for the Bruins is a showdown with Washington on Oct. 29 at Drake Stadium beginning at 8:00 p.m. That match can be seen live on the Fox Soccer Channel.
