LOS ANGELES - The UCLA men's water polo team has signed local high school standouts Paul Reynolds and Alex Fortis to National Letters of Intent, as announced by head coach Adam Wright. The two high school seniors will enroll at UCLA and play for the men's water polo team in September 2011.
Reynolds competed as a four-year varsity letterwinner at Foothill High School (Tustin, Calif.), while Fortis starred at Loyola High School (Los Angeles).
"We are thrilled to welcome these two talented players to UCLA" Wright said. "These two athletes are very coachable young men. Paul had a fantastic career at Foothill, and we will look for him to make an immediate impact for us next fall. Alex is a very skilled left-handed attacker who thrived at Loyola and will be a major asset to our program."
Reynolds secured All-CIF Southern Section Division II Player of the Year honors as a senior in 2010, leading Foothill to the semifinals of the CIF Division II playoffs. He was also named the 2010 Orange County Register co-Player of the Year.
Reynolds led all Orange County area high school players with 160 goals as a senior, scoring 10 goals in a 13-6 victory over University High School in a CIF Division II first-round playoff victory last fall. He tallied 96 goals as a junior in 2009 after having led Foothill to the CIF Division I title in 2008. Reynolds has competed for the USA Junior National Team in addition to participating with SoCal Water Polo.
Fortis, who resides in Manhattan Beach, Calif., earned second-team All-CIF Southern Section Division I honors as a senior in 2010. A first-team All-Mission League selection as a senior, Fortis also captured All-Southern California Water Polo Team accolades and California-Hawaii All-America honors in 2010. A left-handed driver who excelled at Loyola, Fortis has also played for Los Angeles Water Polo Club.
