Box Score

BERKELEY, CA - After rallying from a two-run deficit, UCLA (23-17,6-6)allowed one run in the bottom of the seventh inning as California (22-25, 7-11) posted a 3-2 win on Sunday. With wins on Friday and Saturday, the Bruins won their second Pac-10 road series.

California put up two runs in the first inning to take an early lead on Sunday afternoon. However, in the top of the fourth inning, the Bruins scored two runs of their own to even the score. A lead-off double from Matt Thayer started the frame before Brandon Averill moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. Thayer would then score on a single from Preston Griffin. After a ground out and a walk to Chad Concolino, Mike Svetlic brought Griffin around to score to tie the score at 2-2.

The Golden Bear bullpen would keep UCLA off the board for the rest of the game, as five pitchers shut out the Bruin offense in the final five frames. However, California would turn a lead-off walk into a game-winning run in the seventh as David Weiner drove in pinch runner Justin Nelson with a single. Nelson had been sacrificed to second and went to third on a ground out.

Starter Wes Whisler was solid in six innings of action, despite suffering the loss. The left-hander scattered six hits in his six frames and allowed three runs.

The Bruins will wrap-up their five-game road swing on Tuesday when they face-off with Long Beach State at Blair Field in a 6:30 p.m. match-up.
