LOS ANGELES - The third-ranked UCLA women's tennis team kicked off the 2008 dual match season on Monday, cruising to a dominating 7-0 victory over Cal Poly at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
After winning both the singles and doubles titles at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic on Sunday, UCLA's Riza Zalameda was limited only to doubles action against the Mustangs (2-2). She teamed with Yasmin Schnack at the No. 1 position, posting an 8-5 victory over Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong. UCLA's two other doubles teams were also victorious, as the Bruins picked up an 8-6 win at court No. 2 and an 8-3 win at court No. 3 to sweep the doubles play.
With Zalameda absent from the singles lineup, Bruin senior Tracy Lin filled in nicely at the No. 1 spot, dropping just one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Blalock. Right next door at court No. 2, freshman Andrea Remynse looked strong in her dual-match debut, registering a 6-3, 6-3 win over Wong.
The Bruins also had straight-set singles wins from Schnack, Ashley Joelson, Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore. Like Zalameda, senior Alex McGoodwin was also limited only to doubles action on Monday.
UCLA hosts one of its biggest non-conference matches of the season this Friday, as No. 13 Baylor visits the LATC for a 5:00 p.m. match. That will be part of a double-header with the UCLA men's team, which takes on BYU at 1:30 p.m.
