MINNEAPOLIS - The seventh-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday, falling to No. 9 Northern Iowa 3-0 before rebounding to defeat Rhode Island 3-0. UCLA is now 3-3 on the season, and will return to action Wed., Sept. 11, at San Francisco before traveling to Portland, OR, for the Nike Portland Invitational.
In the day's opener, the Bruins lost to Northern Iowa 30-20, 30-24, 30-24. Brynn Murphy and Heather Cullen led the Bruins offensively with eight kills apiece. Libero Chrissie Zartman was the only Bruin with double-figure digs, checking in with 10 for the match. UCLA hit just .047 for the match, never topping .100 for an individual game.
UCLA rebounded to earn a 30-26, 30-16, 30-28 win over Rhode Island. Senior Lauren Fendrick led the way with 18 kills and 10 digs, followed by Brittany Ringel with 15 and Murphy with 11. The Bruins attack percentage was greatly improved in this match, hitting .400 in game one, .238 in game two and .259 in game three.
The Bruins will return to action next Wednesday, Sept. 11, at San Francisco before continuing north to Portland, OR, for the Nike Portland Invitational Sept. 13-14, where they will face host Portland, Cal State Fullerton and Toledo.
