LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Sophomore Albert Garcia (So., Long Beach/Wilson) scored three times and UCLA held off UCSB's second-half charge to down the Gauchos 8-7 Sunday afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's water polo match at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
The victory allowed the Bruins (11-3 overall, 6-1 MPSF) to clinch second place in the league standings and a favorable seeding for the conference tournament at Berkeley on Thanksgiving weekend. UCSB (6-9, 2-5) dropped their fifth consecutive match.
Garcia scored the only two goals of the first period, then Matt Flesher (Jr., Diamond Bar/Brea Olinda), Ted Peck (Fr., Irvine/University), and Brett Ormsby (Fr., El Cajon/Valhalla) each found the net in the second quarter to give the Bruins a 5-1 lead at intermission.
UCLA came out flat in the third quarter and the Gauchos responded with three unanswered goals to cut their deficit to one. But the Bruins regained control with two minutes left in the third period. Garcia completed his hat trick after collecting a rebound of his own shot and fired the ball past UCSB goalkeeper Trevor Spence. Less than a minute later, Garcia hit Flesher with a pass in transition and Flesher tallied his second goal.
Gaucho two-meter Mark Welch broke back with two tallies, including a second-chance goal of his own with 3:30 remaining that cut the UCLA lead to 7-6. But Ormsby capitalized on an ensuing power play to score an insurance goal, which proved necessary when Patrick Treman scored with 24 seconds remaining for UCSB.
UCLA closes out its conference schedule by visiting the Anteaters of UC Irvine Saturday at 7 p.m.
