Feb. 8, 2006

The No. 24 UCLA men's track and field team will head to Ames, IA for the Iowa State Classic on Friday, Feb. 10 through Saturday, Feb. 11 as the Bruins continue their indoor season. Over 75 men's and women's track teams from all over the country will be competing at the ISU Classic, as many of the Big 12 Conference teams, several Big Ten Conference teams, as well as many other well-known Division I track teams including Alabama, Clemson, Mississippi and Kentucky will be in attendance.

The Bruins, who moved into Trackwire's Top-25 for the first time this season, will look to pick up more NCAA qualifiers as a small group of athletes heads to Iowa.

Sophomore John Caulfield, who picked up a provisional qualifier and indoor lifetime-best last weekend at the United Heritage Invite in the shot put (62-5), along with Jake Knight (58-1), Greg Garza (51-11.25), and possibly Jeremy Silverman (60-6.50) will compete in the shot put.

All-American Erik Emilsson will run the mile in an effort to improve on his provisional qualifying time, which he achieved at the Husky Indoor two weeks ago (4:03.76).

Craig Everhart, also a provisional qualifier, will run the 400m (47.04), as well as a leg of the 4x400m relay. The 4x400m relay holds the seventh-fastest time in the nation this year, 3:08.84, and after taking a week off, will look to improve on that time and move up in the national rankings. Brandon Johnson, Elijah Wells and James Rhoades will make up the rest of the 4x400m relay squad.

Alex Pearlstone will compete in the 60m (7.01) and long jump, while Demetre Howard (LJ-23-10.25, TJ-48-8) and Michael Johnson, Jr. (LJ-23-5, TJ-49-6.50) will both compete in the long and triple jumps.

Austin Ramos, a 2005 NCAA Cross Country All-American will open up his indoor season this weekend as he runs the 5000m. Kyle Shackleton, also competing in his first indoor meet of 2006, will also run the 5000m.

The running events will begin with the women's 60-meter hurdles at 2 p.m. on Friday. The field events will also start at 2 p.m. on Friday, beginning with the men's long jump. Friday will end with the men's 5,000-meter run, which is estimated to start at 6:50 p.m.

Saturday will begin with the women's 3,000-meter run at 9:45 a.m. and field events will start at 11:30 a.m. with the women's triple jump. The meet will conclude with the men's 4x400 meter relay, estimated to begin at 6:50 p.m.
