LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team downed Chapman, 10-4, in a non-conference tilt under cloudy skies at Spieker Aquatics Center on Sunday afternoon. Backed by junior goalkeeper Andrew Mesesan's 10-save effort, UCLA (11-3) held Chapman (9-10) to four goals on 20 shots.
Freshmen Zack Golda and Lucas Reynolds each registered their first two collegiate goals. Junior Brett Hays and freshman Chris Wendt also added two goals apiece. Senior Clay Jorth and freshman Paul Pickell scored one goal.
UCLA led the entire match after Hays put the Bruins ahead, 1-0, on a goal from two meters with 6:46 to play in the opening frame. The Bruins quickly built a 4-0 lead on goals from Hays (4:34), Reynolds (3:36) and Wendt (2:52).
Chapman cut its deficit to 4-1 by the end of the first quarter, as Chase Parlee scored with 31 seconds left in the opening period.
The Bruins outscored the visiting Panthers, 2-0, in the second quarter to assume a 6-1 halftime cushion. UCLA received second-quarter goals from Pickell (7:13) and Wendt (5:09).
Jorth added UCLA's seventh goal of the afternoon on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 4:43 left in the third quarter. Chapman answered with a goal from Jack Cutler at 3:08 in the period, reducing the Bruins' lead to 7-2. UCLA scored its second goal of the third frame with 2:07 remaining on a shot from Reynolds.
Golda scored each of UCLA's two goals in the fourth period, connecting on shots at 7:24 and 5:52, to push the Bruins ahead, 10-2. Chapman reduced the Bruins' margin to six goals in the final three minutes - Pierre Masson scored at 2:09, and Matt Siordia netted a 6-on-5 goal with 30 seconds to play.
Chapman goalkeeper Taylor Roszkos made seven saves in the first three quarters. Randy Rosales logged three stops for the Panthers in the fourth period.
UCLA returns to action against UC Irvine on Saturday, Oct. 23. Game time of the MPSF match at UCLA's Spieker Aquatics Center is slated for 6 p.m.
