WALNUT CREEK, CA - UCLA junior catcher Stacey Nuveman (LaVerne, CA/St. Lucy's Priory) was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year for the second time in her career, and was also named the Pac-10 Player of the Week for the second time this season, conference commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Seven of Nuveman's teammates also earned All-Conference recognition, as the All-Pac-10 teams were also announced today.
Nuveman won her first Pac-10 Player of the Year honor as a sophomore in 1999, a year in which UCLA finished the season with a 63-6 record and its eighth NCAA Championship. She sat out the 2000 collegiate season in order to start at catcher for the U.S. Olympic Team, which won a gold medal in Sydney, Australia last fall. This season, Nuveman returned to the Bruins and has led UCLA to a No. 2 ranking and an overall record of 55-5. Nuveman leads the Pac-10 in batting average (.450), on-base percentage (.609), and slugging percentage (.887). Additionally, she ranks second in the Conference in doubles (15), RBI (69), and walks (63) while also ranking third in total bases (134), and fifth in home runs (17).
In earning Pac-10 Player of the Week honors, Nuveman posted a .556 batting average (5-for-9), .600 on-base percentage and .889 slugging percentage while hitting a home run and knocking in three runners. She was also perfect in the field in nine chances in road games against No. 1 Arizona and No. 9 Arizona State.
In addition to Nuveman, P/OF Amanda Freed, 3B/C Tairia Mims and SS Natasha Watley earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors. Freshmen P Keira Goerl and 1B/DP Claire Sua were named to the Conference second team, while DP/P Courtney Dale and OF Stephanie Ramos were named honorable mention All-Pac-10.
Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year awards went to Arizona's Jenny Finch, while the Newcomer of the Year award was given to Washington's Tia Bollinger. For the third consecutive year, there are Co-Coaches of the Year as Mike Candrea (Arizona) and John Rittman (Stanford) share the award.
UCLA opens NCAA Regional play on Thursday afternoon at Easton Stadium on the UCLA campus against sixth seeded Coastal Carolina. First pitch for the Bruins is scheduled for 2 pm.
