Los Angeles - Despite winning two of the three doubles matches and coming close to knocking off the No. 5 doubles team in the nation, the Bruin women's tennis team fell to No. 2 California, 6-1.
No. 7 UCLA started off by taking two doubles matches and pushing a third into a tiebreaker. Laura Gordon and Sara Walker defeated Jieun Jacobs and Jody Scheldt 8-5, while Sarah Gregg and Susi Wild beat Nicole Havlicek and Catherine Lynch, 8-6. Jackie Carleton and Feriel Esseghir led No. 5 Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones 8-7, but the Cal duo came back to win the match 9-8(3).
The Bruins won four of the first six singles sets, but Cal gained momentum and swept the afternoon's second half. No. 9 Kops-Jones beat No. 10 Walker 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, while No. 23 Carleton fell to No. 36 Fusano 2-6, 6-1, 6-.2. On court three, national No. 57 Jacobs beat No. 58 Wild 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
On the back three courts, California's No. 90 Lynch beat No. 79 Gregg, 6-3, 6-2. Havlicek beat Gordon 6-3, 6-0. On court six, Scheldt beat Anya Loncaric 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Bruins will face No. 2 Stanford tomorrow at noon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center in the last home match of the regular season.
