CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - UCLA improved to 9-5 on the 2007 season with a 6-0 victory over Maryland on Saturday afternoon at the Palm Springs Classic. Jodie Legaspi had a grand slam home run for the Bruins and Anjelica Selden earned the victory in the circle, striking out 11.
After three and a half scoreless innings, senior Lisa Dodd got the Bruins on the board with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Bruins continued to threaten in that frame, getting singles from Megan Langenfeld and Kristen Dedmon, but UCLA was unable to push an additional run across.
UCLA came through with a one-out rally in the fourth inning as Krista Colburn drew a one-out walk and went to third on a ground rule double to left hit by Kaila Shull. After Dodd drew a walk to load the bases, Jodie Legaspi connected on the first pitch she saw, putting it over the centerfield fence for a grand slam home run.
Langenfeld followed with a solo shot of her own, bringing the score to 6-0 in UCLA's favor.
Anjelica Selden earned the victory in the game, striking out 11 in a one-hit shutout.
