No. 4 Bruins to Host Bay Area Schools

Feb. 22, 2005

Bruins to Host Bay Area Schools . . .
The No. 4-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (10-1) faces its first two Pac-10 opponents of this season this week, hosting No. 18 Stanford (6-3) and No. 30 Cal (4-2) at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Play kicks off this Friday with the Bruins and Cardinal at 1:30 p.m. Stanford owns a slim 47-45 advantage in the all-time series, however UCLA has won the last two meetings. On Saturday, the Bruins will take on Cal beginning at 1:00 p.m. UCLA owns a 69-9 advantage in that series and has won the last three. Both of this week's matches will NOT count in the Pac-10 standings. The conference matches will take place when the Bruins head up to the Bay Area in early April. UCLA Finishes Tied for Fifth at USTA/ITA National Team Indoors . . .
Although the Bruins suffered their first loss of the season at last week's USTA/ITA National Team Indoors in Chicago, UCLA did pick up two solid victories to tie for fifth place. The Bruins began the tournament with a 4-2 decision over No. 30 Oklahoma State. After dropping the doubles point for the first time this season, UCLA won four out of five singles matches to pick up the win. The ninth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers pulled off the upset a day later in the quarterfinals, recording a 4-2 victory. Friday's match was the exact opposite of the Bruins' first-round win, as UCLA won the doubles point but ended up dropping four of five in singles play. Bruin No. 1 Luben Pampoulov did not play in that match due to an injury suffered before the team left for the tournament. Relegated to the consolation draw, the Bruins rebounded to defeat No. 3 Florida, 4-1 on Saturday.

Kwinta Goes 3-0 at Indoors . . .
Senior Kris Kwinta was the only UCLA player to win all three of his singles matches at the Team Indoors over the weekend, all straight-set victories. He began the tournament with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Oklahoma State's Juan Diaz. The following day he knocked off No. 104 Treat Huey of Virginia, 6-4, 6-3. Huey ended 2004 at the No. 1-ranked junior tennis player in the U.S. Kwinta capped his impressive week by defeating No. 46 Nestor Briceno of Florida, 6-1, 6-1.

Bruins Fall to No. 4 . . .
Following its loss to Virginia at the Team Indoors last week, UCLA dropped two places to No. 4 in the ITA National Team Rankings released on Tuesday. The Bruins had been ranked No. 2 since the preseason. Baylor remains at No. 1, followed by Virginia and Illinois. Mississippi rounds out the top-5 behind UCLA. New individual rankings were also released on Tuesday and the Bruins' top-two players are No. 10 Benjamin Kohlloeffel and No. 12 Luben Pampoulov. Three other players are ranked in singles, including Kris Kwinta (#42), Philipp Gruendler (#65) and Alberto Francis (#89). In doubles, Francis and Kwinta check in at No. 28, while Kohlloeffel and Pampoulov are ranked No. 44.

USC Match Rescheduled for March 1 . . .
UCLA's scheduled match against cross-town rival USC on Feb. 11 was postponed due to rain. With the forecast calling for rain again the following day, both coaches agreed to delay the match until Tuesday, Mar. 1 at 1:30 p.m. It will be held at USC's Marks Tennis Stadium.

Head Coach Billy Martin . . .
The 1996 ITA National Coach of the Year and UCLA's 1975 NCAA singles champion, Billy Martin, owns a 263-51 (.838) overall record and is currently in his 12th season as head coach at UCLA. In 11 season's, Martin has guided the Bruins to the national title match three times and has never had a team finish out of the top five at the NCAA Championships.
