The UCLA men's and women's track and field teams will head to Northridge, CA for the Northridge Relays Thursday, March 16 through Saturday, March 18 as they continue the outdoor season.
Both the men and women are coming off of a two-week break having last competed at the UCLA Invitational on March 4. So far, the outdoor season has already been successful as a combined 20 regional qualifying marks have been achieved - 11 on the men's side and 9 on the women's side.
Twenty-seven student-athletes will represent the men's team this weekend with all event groups represented. In the sprints, freshman Alex Pearlstone (100m/200m), sophomore Derrick Cook (200m/110mHH), sophomore David Shipp (400m), junior Michael Elbogen (400IH), sophomore Jason Eiker-Wiles (400mH), junior Tracy Session (400mH) and freshman Torsten Niegmann (400H) will compete.
Seven distance runners will compete in the 1500m - sophomore Drew Shackleton, senior Nick DeFelice, junior Micky Cobrin, senior Martell Munguia, sophomore Mike Haddan, sophomore Matt Stollenwerk and freshman Kyle Shackleton. Freshmen Laef Barnes and Ryan Gordon will run the 800m.
Freshman Boldizsar Kocsor will be the sole Bruin in the hammer competition, while fellow freshman Vache Sevajian will be the only UCLA thrower in the shot put. Senior Jeremy Silverman, junior Jason Rider and sophomore John Caulfield will all compete in the discus.
A pretty full team will head up the 405 to Northridge this weekend as all event groups will be well represented. In the sprints, the Bruins will run a 4x100m and 4x400m relay, while senior Dawn Harper (100m, 200m), sophomore DeShanta Harris (200m, 400m) and freshmen Nicole Leach (200m, 400m) and Chanelle Curry (200m, 400m) will run in individual events.
On the distance side, 11 student-athletes will be in action as junior Ashley Caldwell, freshman Lauren Jirges and sophomore Shantae McKinney run the 800m. In the 1500m, seniors Sarah West and Leslie Barrie, juniors Allison Hall and Jenna Timinsky, sophomores Alice Bohannon and Claire Rethmeier, and freshmen Ciara Viehweg and Gabrielle Bournes will compete.
In the jump events, freshman Rhonda Watkins will compete in the long jump, while sophomore Nicole Duhart will make her UCLA debut in the triple jump. Freshman Lauren Correa will compete in the high jump
Heptathletes Hillary Werth and Georgea Richards will also compete this weekend. Werth, who threw 134-9 as an unattached athlete two weeks ago at the UCLA Invite, will again compete in the javelin, as well as the shotput. Richards will compete in five events - 200m, long jump, high jump, shot put and javelin.
Senior Chelsea Johnson, who won the NCAA Indoor pole vault title last weekend (14-9), will compete at Northridge, along with junior Jacqueline Nguyen, sophomores Ingrid Kantola, Elizabeth Woepse, Nicci Faires and Megan Jamerson, and freshman Anastasia Papadakis.
