Coach Rick Neuheisel's Bruins held their final major scrimmage of the pre-season on Friday afternoon at Spaulding Field. The Bruins scored four touchdowns on the day in a 60-play scrimmage.
Senior quarterback Kevin Craft connected with freshman Morrell Presley on a 15-yard toss to open the scoring. Redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Prince then led the team 50-yards for a score. Prince completed three straight passes on the drive to set up the touchdown, including a 21-yarder to Presley which took the ball down the one-yard line. Redshirt freshman Milton Knox carried it into the end zone from there. Freshman running back Damien Thigpen raced 14 yards around the left end for the third score of the day. Three Thigpen runs covered all 25 yards of the drive in the red zone drill. Freshman running back Demetrius Papadakis capped of the day's scoring with a 17-yard scoring burst.
The defense surrendered four double digit runs on the afternoon (the two scoring runs and a 19-yard scamper by redshirt freshman Johnathan Franklin and a 10-yard run by Papadakis). Redshirt junior Andy Keane recorded the lone interception of the day, picking off a screen pass attempt by Prince. The longest play of the day was a 27-yard aerial from freshman quarterback Richard Brehaut to sophomore receiver Antwon Moutra.
The Bruins will take Saturday off and reconvene on Sunday for meetings and conditioning. They will hold the next full practice on Monday as they prepare for the Sept. 5 opener in the Rose Bowl against San Diego State.
"I thought it was a good scrimmage, when you get to play 60 plays and you're eight days away from a game, and get to thud with tired legs and all that kind of stuff and bang around," said Neuheisel, "I think that it was good. I saw what I needed to see. I think guys realize that we're not game ready yet and I think that's a call to arms over the weekend while they get a little rest and we should have great spirited practices on Monday, Tuesday and on through the week. I just like where we are. I think people are growing, I think people are starting to get comfortable. It was important to get more game-like activity today.''
