Trojans Come Back to Beat Bruins in Five

Sept. 26, 2008

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Freshman Amanda Gil led UCLA with 14 kills and tied a career-high with nine blocks, but the fifth-ranked Trojans came back from 2-1 down to defeat the fourth-ranked Bruins in five sets on Friday at the Galen Center. Scores were 26-24, 14-25, 25-20, 14-25, 5-15.

The Bruins see their nine-match losing streak come to an end and fall to 10-2 and 0-1 in Pac-10 play, while the Trojans improve to 8-2 and 1-0 in league action.

Senior Ali Daley had a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs, while senior Jessica Fine had 27 digs. Sophomore Dicey McGraw was also in double figures in kills with 11. Senior Nellie Spicer posted 42 assists, nine digs and six blocks, while sophomore Juliane Piggott added seven kills. The Bruins hit just .092 for the match.

UCLA scored three of the first four points, but USC went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. Piggott, Daley and Gil had successive kills to put the Bruins up 3-1, but four straight by the Trojans made it 5-3. Following another 9-6 run, the Trojans found themselves up 14-9. USC maintained its advantage until UCLA made a late run to re-take the lead.

Trailing 20-17, the Bruins scored five in a row on senior Jade Machado's excellent serving run to take a 22-20 lead. Gil began the run with a kill and then teamed up with Daley on a block. After two USC attack errors, a spike by Daley made it a two-point Bruin lead. The Trojans wouldn't quit though and went on a 4-1 spurt to give them a set point at 24-23. A Gil/Spicer block tied it back up at 24 and a solo roof by Camp gave the Bruins a set point. On the serve by sophomore Jazmin Machado, the Trojans had miscommunication following their second hit and let it drop to give the Bruins a 26-24 victory. Daley, Gil and McGraw all had four kills in the first set, as the Bruins hit just .170. USC swung at a .020 percentage in the opener.

The second set was all USC, which never trailed. The Trojans scored five of the first seven and never looked back. UCLA rallied back to within one at 6-5, but USC netted an 8-3 run to go up six at 14-8. The Bruins never got closer than six the rest of the way, as USC's highest lead was 11 on two occasions and the Trojans claimed the second set 25-14. Gil had three kills in the second, as the Bruins hit .156. The Trojans hit an amazing .543 with just one error and 20 kills in 35 swings.

The first part of the third was an even affair before UCLA pulled away late to go up two sets to one. Neither team led by more than two until a 4-0 run put the Bruins up by four. Tied at 12, a Spicer kill, a Gil/Spicer block and consecutive kills by Daley and Piggott made it 16-12 Bruins. The Trojans scored two of the next three, but a 5-2 run gave the Bruins a set-best lead of six at 22-16. Daley started and ended the run with kills. On set point, a roof by Gil and Spicer gave the Bruins the 25-20 win. Daley had four kills in the third, while McGraw posted three. UCLA had five blocks and hit .194 in the third, while USC hit .027.

The fourth was similar to the third, as the Trojans led wire-to-wire. USC went up 6-2 early, but a 4-1 run put UCLA to within one at 7-6. Daley and McGraw had kills during the run, as the Bruins also benefitted from two USC errors. But that was the closest UCLA got. An 8-1 run made it 15-7 USC and the lead never fell below five the rest of the way. The Trojans claimed the 25-14 victory, hitting .244. The Bruins hit in the negative at -.044.

The Trojans used their momentum from the fourth set and ran away with the fifth. The teams traded the first two points, but the Trojans went on runs of 6-1 and 13-2 to take a 14-3 advantage. A kill by Jessica Gysin won it for USC, 15-5 in the deciding set.

Gysin paced the Trojans with 16 kills and 16 digs, while Alex Jupiter had 15 kills and 15 digs. USC had two more double-doubles with Taylor Carico posting 51 assists and 12 digs and Kimmee Roleder recording 12 kills and 11 digs. USC hit .216 for the match.

The Bruins conclude their 14-match road trip to open the season in Oregon next weekend as Pac-10 play continues. UCLA faces 11th-ranked Oregon next Friday and Oregon State on Saturday. First serve for both matches is at 7 p.m.
