LOS ANGELES - UCLA freshman tennis player Ashley Joelson nearly qualified for the singles main draw at the 2005 ITA/Riviera All-American on Wednesday, falling in the final round of qualifying.
Joelson, from Austin, Texas, lost to BYU's Olga Boulytcheva, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3. After winning three matches in pre-qualifying to reach the qualifying draw, Joelson entered the day with qualifying wins over Indiana's Sarah Batty and Wake Forest's Alex Hirsch.
Joelson can still get into the main draw as a "lucky loser" if one of the main draw participants were to pull out.
Other Bruins competing in the qualifying at Riviera were Laura Gordon, Tracy Lin and Alex McGoodwin. Gordon lost to Florida's Diana Srebovic, 6-2, 6-1, while Lin was beaten by Cal's Christina Visico, 7-5, 6-4. McGoodwin fell to Northwestern's Alexis Prousis, 6-2, 6-2.
Gordon and McGoodwin lost their opening match in the doubles qualifying draw, falling to Florida's Boglarka Berecz/Lolita Frangulyan.
