The second-ranked UCLA women's water polo team defeated fifth-ranked UC Irvine 22-7 on Thursday afternoon at Sunset Recreation Center.
Coming off a disappointing loss to Stanford last week, the Bruins jumped on their opponent early and never looked back. UCLA scored the first nine goals of the match on the way to their 17th consecutive home win dating back to 2004. The Bruins are now 11-0 all-time against the Anteaters. With the victory, UCLA improves to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the MPSF conference. UCI drops to 10-4 on the season, and 1-2 in MPSF play.
The Bruins pounced on the Anteaters to take a 5-0 lead after one quarter of action. Jillian Kraus scored three of the first nine UCLA goals. Jessica Lewis scored the only goal for UCI before halftime. The Bruins led 11-1 at the break, and never let the Anteaters get any closer. UCLA was paced by Kelly Rulon's four goals. Jillian Kraus, Kacy Kunkel, Katie Rulon, and Gabrielle Domanic all had multiple-goal performances as well. Twelve different players scored goals for the Bruins. UCI was led by Jessica Lewis and Robyn Kaake with two goals apiece.
With her four goals today, Kelly Rulon moved past Catherine von Schwartz into second place on UCLA's all-time scorer's list. She needs 46 more goals to tie current UCLA assistant coach Coralie Simmons as the all-time scorer. Assuming the Bruins make the postseason, Kelly needs to average about three goals per game to accomplish the feat.
The team plays tomorrow against Cal State Northridge at 3pm at Sunset Recreation Center.
