April 22, 2006

Box Score

Los Angeles - UCLA junior LHP Dave Huff earned his second-consecutive complete game win with a dominating performance against No. 10 Arizona State to lead the Bruins to a 5-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Huff (5-2) gave up one run on two hits with six strikeouts and retired the final 22-of-23 Sun Devils he faced in the game.

The win improves UCLA to 22-16 and 6-5 in the Pac-10, while Arizona State drops to 28-13 and 7-4 in the Pac-10.

Senior Chris Jensen went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored, and freshman Jermaine Curtis went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI.

UCLA jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Sun Devils in the first inning. Curtis led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk, followed by a base hit through the right side by Jensen. Junior Tim Stewart then singled through the left side to drive in Curtis from second. Eric Taylor, Jr. walked to load the bases for the Bruins with no outs. Senior Sean Smith then reached on a fielder's choice on a ground ball to shortstop to score Jensen from third and give UCLA a 2-0 lead. Freshmen Brandon Crawford and Blair Dunlap both struck out swinging to end the inning.

ASU put one on the board in the second inning on a RBI single by Brett Wallace to trail 2-1, and would go hitless after that.

Huff retired 14-consecutive Sun Devils from the second inning on until giving up a walk to Ike Davis in the seventh inning.

UCLA put up three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 5-1 lead. Crawford got it started with a bunt single to lead off the inning.

ASU starter Jeff Urlaub retired 15-of-18 Bruins from the first inning on before giving up Crawford's bunt single in the seventh.

Tony Barnette then came in to relieve Urlaub and face pinch hitter junior Hector Ambriz. Ambriz laced a double down the right field line to score Crawford from first and give UCLA a 3-1 cushion. Curtis flared a two-out double that dropped in left field to score pinch runner Mike Metzger from second, and Jensen followed with a single through the right side to score Curtis and put UCLA up 5-1.

UCLA and Arizona State will play the decisive game of the three-game series on Sunday, April 22 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
