UCLA Owns Four-shot Lead After Round One

The second-ranked UCLA women's golf team took the first-round lead Friday at the PING/ASU Invitational, hosted by Arizona State at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, AZ.

The Bruins posted a team score of 291 (+3) and led Arizona State and Oregon, which were tied at 295 (+7). California was fourth at 297 (+9). Stanford and Pepperdine were next at 13 and 14 over par, but had not finished the first round.

Individually, UCLA's Susie Mathews held the top spot on the leaderboard after firing a first round 70 (-2). After taking a double-bogey six on the 11th hole (her second) she birdied the 12th, eagled the 14th, and posted birdies on the 16th and 18th holes for an outward 34 (-3). She played her second nine in one-over par 36.

Freshman Amie Cochran posted a score of 71 (-1) after playing her final nine in two-under par 33. She was even after 10 holes and birdied the second (her 11th) and fifth holes. She was alone in third place.

Senior Melissa Martin and junior Hannah Jun each posted scores of 75 (+3) and were tied for 21st. Jun recovered from a front nine 41 and played her back nine in one-under 34. Martin played her front nine in three-over par 40 and her inward nine in even par 35.

Absent from the Top 20 was senior Charlotte Mayorkas, the two-time defending champion of this event. Mayorkas posted a 77, although she recovered with a back nine score of 34 (-1). She was tied for 41st, seven strokes behind Mathews.
