Walnut Creek, Calif. - UCLA head men's tennis coach Billy Martin was named co-coach of the year in the Pac-12 on Friday, as the conference announced its year-end awards. The Bruins also had four players earn all-league honors led by first-team selection Nick Meister.
Martin, who is in his 19th season at the helm of the UCLA men's tennis program, led the Bruins to a perfect 7-0 record in Pac-12 play this season. The highlight of the year came on April 20 at USC, as the Bruins posted a 4-3 victory over their cross-town rivals to win the Pac-12 regular season title. The win also ended the top-ranked Trojans' 45-match winning streak. UCLA also reached the Pac-12 Tournament final, falling to USC, 4-2. The Bruins head into this week's NCAA Tournament with a 22-3 overall record. Martin shares the honor with USC head coach Peter Smith. It marks Martin's second coach of the year honor, as he was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 1996.
Leading the way for the Bruins in the player awards was first-team selection Nick Meister, who was a unanimous selection along with USC's Steve Johnson. The redshirt senior from Trabuco Canyon, Calif. is currently ranked No. 16 in the country in singles. He owns a 19-5 overall singles record and is also 17-4 in dual matches, having played at both the No. 1 and 2 singles positions. Meister was an honorable mention selection in 2009 and earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors as a junior in 2010. He did not play in 2011 due to injury.
Clay Thompson and Adrien Puget were both named to the Pac-12 Second Team. Thompson, a sophomore from Venice Beach, Calif., is currently ranked No. 62 nationally in singes, owning a 24-11 overall record (14-7 in dual matches). Puget, a sophomore from Le Haillan, France, is UCLA's second highest ranked player at No. 46. He has lost just once in dual-match play this year (20-1) and is 23-2 overall. He is also ranked No. 44 in doubles with teammate Alex Brigham.
Rounding out UCLA's all-conference selections is freshman Marcos Giron, who earned honorable mention acclaim. Giron, from nearby Thousand, Oaks, Calif., is 24-7 overall in singles this year and is 17-5 in dual matches, playing mostly at the No. 4 spot.
