Greco To Sit Out Rest Of Basketball Season For Medical Reasons

Dec. 12, 2001

Los Angeles, Calif. - UCLA announced today that women's basketball senior guard Michelle Greco will not participate for the remainder of the 2001-02 season. Due to a history of mild concussions during her sophomore and junior years, the UCLA Sports Medicine Staff believes that Greco should take a year off from participation in basketball competition.

At the conclusion of the women's basketball season, UCLA will submit a medical hardship petition to the Pacific-10 Conference with the hope that Greco will be granted another year of collegiate eligibility. To date, Greco has participated in five regular-season basketball contests. She is eligible to petition for a medical hardship waiver in as much as she has played in no more than 20% of the team's contests this year.

Greco led the Pac-10 in scoring last season with a 19.9 points per game mark and was averaging 23.6 points a contest through five games this season. She sat out the last two games against San Diego (Dec. 5) and Colorado (Dec. 8).

"After consulting with our sports medicine staff, we have determined that it is in Michelle's best interest to take a year off from scrimmaging and competition, " said Bruin head coach Kathy Olivier. "It is hard to measure the value of Michelle to our team. Her importance certainly goes beyond the numbers on the stat sheet."

"While sitting out will be difficult, I am encouraged by the doctors who have indicated that taking a year off from playing at this time will enhance my ability to return for my senior season and then play at the next level," said Greco.
