Nicole Leach won her second consecutive 400m hurdles Pac-10 title (55.95) on Sunday afternoon in Palo Alto as the sophomore was UCLA's sole individual event winner on the final day of the Pac-10 Championships. The Bruins finished 3rd overall with 118.5 points, while Arizona State won the team title with 158 points. Last year, UCLA finished fourth with 103 points.
Leach's win in the 400m hurdles gives UCLA a conference champion in the intermediate hurdles in six of the last seven years. She also ran a blistering 51-second plus anchor leg in the 4x400m relay.
On winning the race: "I knew I had to win since I lost the 400m. The team was counting on me and I knew I couldn't get second in both."
On doubling up in the open 400m and hurdles: "It's hard. I'm definitely not going to say it is easy, but knowing I did it against USC helped me be confident about doing it at Pac-10's"
On the tradition of Pac-10 Champion 400m hurdlers at UCLA: "There is a lot of pressure to keep it up and I'm doing my best. I'm trying not to be as good as them, but better."
100m - Jolanda Diego improved on yesterday's season-best (11.70) as she finished fifth in a time of 11.58.
200m - Jolanda Diego pulled out of the 200m after feeling a twinge in her right hamstring during the 100m final.
400m - Nicole Leach led for most of the race, but was edged out by .007 seconds by ASU's LaTosha Wallace at the line, giving Leach second-place. She equaled her season-best in a time of 51.97 (51.978) while Wallace ran 51.971. Johanna Monthe had a big day in the 400m, as she finished third in a lifetime-best run of 53.54 (old best, 53.77). Maris Wisdom was fourth in a time of 53.84 as the Bruins picked up 19 points in the quarter-mile event.
800m - Allie Bohannon was running well but got tripped up around the 250m mark by Cal's Mackenizie Pierce as both tumbled to the track. Neither athlete could finish the race, but Bohannon's injuries from the fall do not appear to be that serious.
