Bruins Improve Record to 7-1
UCLA earned a pair of non-conference wins last weekend, extending its overall record to 7-1. The Bruins downed Pepperdine, 11-7, at home on Friday night, before defeating Loyola Marymount, 11-7, at the Lions' home pool on Saturday afternoon. Griffin White scored three goals to lead UCLA past Pepperdine, and Paul Reynolds netted four goals in the win at LMU.
Griffin White Earns MPSF Honors
Griffin White, a junior from Mission Viejo, Calif., captured KAP7 MPSF Player of the Week honors on Monday, Sept. 26, after having led UCLA with six goals in both wins over the weekend. White registered a hat trick in each victory. He becomes the first Bruin to win the conference's weekly award since Chay Lapin on Nov. 2, 2009.
Getting to JFTB in Los Alamitos
UCLA's two games on Saturday will be played at the Joint Forces Training Base (JTFB) in Los Alamitos, Calif. The pool is located on the training base at 11206 Lexington Drive (zip code 90720). Should the Bruins defeat Air Force on Saturday morning, UCLA will play both of its games on Sunday at JTFB. Long Beach State is serving as the tournament's host. The other tournament matches will be played at LBSU's Campus Pool.
UCLA's Leading Performers
Josh Samuels and Brett Hays enter the SoCal Tournament leading UCLA with 13 goals each. Paul Reynolds has scored 12 goals and ranks second on the team with 10 steals. Cullen Hennessy, who has scored seven goals on 19 attempts, leads the Bruins with 10 assists. Aimone Barabino has drawn 13 earned exclusions to lead the club, including one five-meter penalty.
Key Players with Scoring Streaks
Josh Samuels and Paul Reynolds have each scored in UCLA's last six games. In fact, Samuels has scored in each of his six games this season, as the junior from Villa Park, Calif., did not play in UCLA's first two games (was playing for the USA Junior National Team in Greece). Cullen Hennessy has scored one goal in each of the Bruins' last five matches. Brett Hays added at least one goal in each of UCLA's first five matches.
Recent Tournament History
UCLA has advanced to the finals in four of the last five in-season tournaments (NorCal, SoCal). Most recently, UCLA dropped a 10-8 decision to USC in the championship match of this season's NorCal Tournament (Sept. 18). UCLA last won either the NorCal or SoCal in 2004 (SoCal).
UCLA's Schedule Breakdown
The Bruins will play four more games at home - versus California (Oct. 7), Pacific (Nov. 4), USC (Nov. 18) and UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 19). UCLA has eight road games remaining, matches which will not be tournament contests.
Hennessy Serves as Team Captain
Senior Cullen Hennessy has been a significant contributor for UCLA the past three seasons. Last year, he started 23 matches, totaling 21 goals and 13. In 2009, he scored 23 goals and led UCLA with 27 assists, leading the team to the NCAA Tournament's championship match. He scored 14 goals as a freshman in 2008.
