LOS ANGELES - Top-ranked UCLA extended its season-opening winning streak to 15 games on Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium, posting a doubleheader sweep of UC Santa Barbara in the first two games of the 2004 Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament. The Bruins won the opening game 10-0 in six innings before winning the nightcap by a 7-0 margin.
Game 1: UCLA 10, UCSB 0 (6 innings)
UCLA opened the game with two runs in the first inning, thanks primarily to four walks issued by UCSB pitcher Lindsey Sommer. Jodie Legaspi connected on a bases-loaded single with two outs to score both runs.
In the second, Julie Hoshizaki led off the inning for the Bruins with a single to right field in her first at-bat of the season. She went to third on a double by Caitlin Benyi and scored on a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Ramos.
The Bruins scored seven more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on two home runs. Julie Hoshizaki led off the inning with her second hit of the day, a single to right field. Caitlin Benyi followed with a single, and the pair would score on the fourth home run of the season by Andrea Duran, a shot that hit the shed just beyond the fence in left center field. Stephanie Ramos followed with a bunt single and was pushed to second on a Claire Sua walk. After Emily Zaplatosch loaded the bases, reaching on an outfield error by the Gauchos, Lisa Dodd connected on her second grand slam home run of the season, a shot to left field to invoke the mercy rule for a 10-0 Bruin win.
Bruin pitcher Keira Goerl struck out five batters in the first four innings and did not allow a hit until the top of the fifth inning. She finished with five strikeouts for her eighth victory of the season, a one-hit shutout.
Game 2: UCLA 7, UCSB 0
The Bruins batted as the visiting team in the second game of the day and opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Andrea Duran recorded a one-out single and came around to score on a home run by Stephanie Ramos, her third of the season, a round-tripper that hit the batting cage in right center field.
It turned into a four-run inning for the Bruins as Emily Zaplatosch had a two-out single and would score on a triple to center field by Jodie Legaspi. A Lisa Dodd single would score Legaspi, giving the Bruins a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half.
Ramos led off the fifth inning with her second home run in as many at-bats, and Claire Sua followed with a home run of her own, clubbing her second home run of the season over the left field fence to give the Bruins a 6-0 lead. Freshman Jodie Legaspi then stepped in with one out and clubbed her second home run of the season and fourth hit of the day onto the batting cage roof for a 7-0 UCLA lead.
In the circle, Lisa Dodd recorded six strikeouts, including two in the seventh inning, while pitching a three-hit shutout for her sixth win of the season.
The Bruins return to action on Sunday in the final game of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament at Easton Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 1 pm.
