Malibu, CA - Despite a game-high 31 points from senior guard Michelle Greco, the UCLA women's basketball team dropped an 88-67 decision to Pepperdine Saturday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.
It marked just the second time in 13 meetings that Pepperdine has defeated UCLA. The Waves registered their first-ever victory over the Bruins in 2000 when they recorded a 78-56 win at Pauley Pavilion.
With the win, Pepperdine improved to 4-3 on the year while UCLA dropped to 4-3.
The Waves were in control throughout the contest as they built a 16-point first-half lead before settling for a 46-32 advantage at halftime. Pepperdine opened the second half with a 9-2 run to open up a 20-point lead at 54-34 with 17:47 remaining.
However, UCLA went on a 14-3 spurt over the next four minutes to cut the Waves' lead to nine points at 57-48 with 13:17 left in the contest. Freshman guard Nikki Blue led the comeback with eight points, while Greco had six points during the run. That proved to be as close as the Bruins would get the rest of the way as Pepperdine outscored UCLA 27-10 during the next 11 minutes to build a 26-point lead at 84-58 with 2:51 remaining.
Pepperdine shot 45.1 percent (32-for-71) from the field and out-rebounded the Bruins 47-39. UCLA managed just 33.3 percent (19-for-57) shooting from the field.
Blue finished with 14 points and a team-high tying eight rebounds. Junior forward Whitney Jones also had eight rebounds to go along with four points.
Pepperdine forward Anna Lembke registered a double-double for Pepperdine as she scored a season-high 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Shandrika Lee scored 23 points.
