On Tap . . .
Following a two-week break, the top-ranked UCLA men's tennis team will host a pair of matches this week at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. On Friday, the Bruins will host Arizona at the LATC beginning at 1:30 p.m. UCLA and Arizona have already faced off once this season with the Bruins taking a 6-1 decision in Tucson back on Feb. 23. On Saturday, Arizona State visits the LATC looking to avenge its 6-1 loss to UCLA back on Feb. 22 in Tempe. That match will begin at Noon. Unlike the meetings earlier this year, both of the matches this week count in the Pac-10 standings.
Bruins Vault to No. 1 . . .
When the new computer rankings came out on March 20, UCLA jumped two spots to the top position, claiming its first No. 1 ranking of the 2002 season. UCLA, which has been in the top-5 all year, started the season at No. 3, however fell to No. 5 after its loss to USC on Feb. 8 at the National Team Indoors.
Bruins' Win Streak Reaches Eight . . .
Since UCLA's loss to USC back on Feb. 7, the Bruins have won eight in a row, starting with Duke back on Feb. 8. During the streak, the Bruins have registered three wins over top-10 opponents, including No. 9 Duke, 4-1 (2/8), No. 9 Pepperdine, 5-2 (2/27) and No. 3 USC, 4-3 (3/7).
Clemens on Fire . . .
The highest ranked Bruin at No. 6 in the nation, Tobias Clemens has played UCLA's last 10 matches at the No. 1 position, where he is 9-1. He owns one of the best records on the team at 26-4 and is 21-1 in his last 22 matches, his only loss coming to Steven Capriati of Arizona on Feb. 23. Clemens owned an 18-match winning streak from Nov. 8 to Feb. 22. He continued his dominance against crosstown rival USC on Mar. 7, defeating Trojan No. 1 Andrew Park for the fourth time this year. He will be looking to avenge his loss to Capriati when the two face off this Friday at the LATC.
