Two Bruins Selected in First Round of WPS Draft

Oct. 6, 2008

SAN FRANCISCO - Former UCLA All-Americans Jill Oakes and Danesha Adams were both selected in the first round of the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) Draft on Monday. Oakes was chosen as the No. 2 overall pick by the Bay Area team (nickname TBA), while Adams went to the Chicago Red Stars as the sixth overall pick.

Monday actually marked the third round of selections for the new league, which had already allocated players from the U.S. Women's National Team, and international ranks prior to today's draft.

""I'm thrilled for Jill and Danesha because they are competitors and I know that they didn't want to finish their soccer careers collegiately," said UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis. "Both players continue to have aspirations to make the Senior National Team, and this is going to help them in that goal. They are going to be successful at this next level and I think it's wonderful for this country that women's professional soccer is now a reality."

Oakes, who played at UCLA from 2002-05, was a two-time NSCAA/adidas All-American, helping the Bruins reach three NCAA College Cups (2003-05). She was a semifinalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy as a senior in 2005. Oakes recently helped the Pali Blues to the W-League Championship in August.

Adams was a member of four NCAA College Cup teams at UCLA from 2004-07, earning NSCAA/adidas All-America honors from 2005-07. She ranks No. 2 all-time at UCLA in career scoring with 140 points (60 goals, 20 assists). Adams also ranks No. 1 all-time at UCLA in game-winning goals (26) and NCAA Tournament scoring (41 points). She has been serving as UCLA's undergraduate assistant coach this season while finishing up her degree in sociology.
