For her efforts at last weekend's UC San Diego Triton Invitational, UCLA senior Jessica Cosby has been named this week's Pac-10 Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
On Saturday, Cosby won the shot put (55-11.50). It was a season-best, NCAA Regional Qualifier, No. 3 on the current collegiate chart and the best mark in the conference. On Friday, she won the hammer throw (206-11/Cosby also leads the conference hammer throw chart/217-5, 3/26).
A four-time All-American from Cleveland HS in Mission Hills, Cosby in 2004 set the Pac-10 hammer throw record (219-5) and won the event at the conference and Regional meets. As a redshirt freshman in 2002, she won the NCAA Outdoor shot put title (57-0.25, personal-best, No. 6 in school history).
Cosby is the second UCLA athlete this season to earn the weekly Pac-10 award. On April 11, Bruin senior Jon Rankin won the conference weekly Men's Track honor, for running a sub-four minute mile.
On Saturday (April 30), the Bruin women and men's track & field teams will travel across town to USC to face the Trojans in the annual traditional dual meet.
