LOS ANGELES - The No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team downed No. 10 San Jose State, 15-5, Sunday afternoon in an MPSF match at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The Bruins (20-0, 6-0 MPSF) were led by senior Jillian Kraus' three-goal effort.
UCLA led San Jose State (9-9, 2-4 MPSF) by a 1-0 margin after the first quarter. Junior Anne Belden scored with 1:52 to play in the opening period, handing UCLA a lead it would not relinquish.
The Bruins outscored the visiting Spartans, 6-1, in the second period to assume a 7-1 halftime lead. Two of UCLA's six second-quarter goals came from junior Tanya Gandy on 6-on-5 opportunities. San Jose State added its first goal of the game on a strike from Adrianna Vogt with three seconds to play in the second quarter.
In the second half, UCLA opened the scoring with a quick goal from Kraus (at 6:49) and another from senior Katie Rulon, extending the Bruins' lead to 9-2. Kraus scored another goal at the end of the quarter, giving the Tustin, Calif., resident a hat trick on the day.
UCLA junior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen totaled four saves in the final quarter to finish with 12 in the match. San Jose State's Kendra Adama recorded nine saves in the cage.
The Bruins return to the pool Friday, March 14 at crosstown rival USC. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
