LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Five members of UCLA's 2004 national champion men's water polo team have been named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's All-Academic team, the conference announced Monday. Led by All-American goalkeeper Joseph Axelrad's team-high 3.50 grade point average, fellow Bruins Matt Jacobs, Ted Peck, David Pietsch and Chris Pulido were also bestowed the honor.
For Axelrad, a senior who graduated last month, it is the second time he has received the distinction. He was also one of eight Bruins named to the team in 2003. Axelrad was named a first-team All-MPSF selection and a first-team All-American goalkeeper late last year after helping lead UCLA to its eighth national title.
Peck is receiving the honor for the third time after being the lone Bruin awarded in 2002 and then again in 2003. He was honored as an honorable mention All-MPSF selection and a third-team All-American in 2004.
Pulido, a sophomore, and Pietsch, a junior, were both named All-Academic selections in 2003, as well. For Jacobs, a freshman, the honor is a first.
