HENDERSON, NEV. - The UCLA softball team improved to 9-0 on Sunday with a 3-0 victory over eighth-ranked Michigan to finish undefeated at the UNLV Classic. Keira Goerl pitched a shuout for the Bruins for her fifth victory of the year with four strikeouts and no walks.
UCLA posted two runs in the bottom of the first inning, as Caitlin Benyi and Andrea Duran led off the inning with back-to-back walks. Stephanie Ramos then put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the pair to scoring position. Claire Sua would reach on a Wolverine error, scoring Benyi, and leaving runners at the corners for Emily Zaplatosch. Zaplatosch connected with a single to right field, scoring Duran for UCLA's second run of the inning.
Michigan threatened in the top of the third inning, as Grace Leutele led off with a ground ball down the left field line that was fielded by a diving Andrea Duran at third base. The ball was called fair, and Duran was unable to get up and make the throw in time to get the out at first base. Leutele was sacrificed to second base by Michelle Teschler. A Bruin error gave the Wolverines runners at the corners with two outs, but Bruin pitcher Keira Goerl forced Michigan into a groundout and fly out to left field to end the inning and the scoring threat.
The Wolverines led off the top of the fourth with a single to center by Tiffany Haas, who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on a slow-rolling infield single by Jennifer Olds, giving Michigan runners at the corners with one out. Olds was replaced by pinch-runner Stephanie Bercaw before Monica Schock struck out for the second out of the inning. Bercaw would steal second during the at-bat of Leutele, who eventually loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch before the inning ended on a ground-out by Teschler.
Goerl finished with a shutout for her fifth victory of the season, striking out four without issuing a walk.
The Bruins return to action on Friday at the Palm Springs Classic against Baylor and Tennessee.
