No. 12 Bruins Host LMU in Season Opener This Thursday . . .
The No. 12 UCLA women's tennis team opens up the 2006 dual-match season this Thursday, hosting Loyola Marymount at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Bruins lead the all-time series 13-0, as UCLA took a 6-1 victory over LMU in its season opener last year. Gordon Reaches Final in Las Vegas . . .
Senior Laura Gordon turned in one of the finest performances of her career last weekend at the Freeman Memorial Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., advancing all the way to the singles final. Gordon, who is ranked No. 94 nationally, defeated two top-10 players en route to the final. She knocked off third-ranked Alice Barnes of Stanford, 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals before posting a 6-1, 6-4 victory over 10th-ranked Theresa Logar, also of Stanford, in the semis. She eventually fell 6-2, 6-0 to Stanford's Celia Durkin in the final. Also competing in the Flight-I Singles Draw in Las Vegas were Tracy Lin (quarterfinals) and Riza Zalameda (Rd. of 16).
Bruin Players Compete at National Collegiate Tennis Classic . . .
Freshman Anna-Viktoria Lind advanced to the quarterfinals of her first tournament as a Bruin, competing at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Indian Wells, Calif. Lind, from Stockholm, Sweden, defeated Northwestern's Nazlie Ghazal and Petra Dizdar of Texas in the first and second rounds respectively. She eventually fell to Stanford's Whitney Deason, 6-1, 6-3. Ashley Joelson and Kate Jolson were also competing at the N.C.T.C.
Bruins Begin the Year Ranked No. 12 Nationally . . .
UCLA checks in at No. 12 in the latest ITA Rankings released on Jan. 10. Stanford is the No. 1 team, followed by Florida, Texas, Georgia Tech and USC. Individually, Alex McGoodwin is ranked No. 77 nationally in singles. She is followed by No. 96 Laura Gordon and No. 99 Ashley Joelson. The Bruins currently do not have a team ranked in doubles.
Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is in her 10th season as the head coach of the UCLA women's tennis team. She owns a career record of 150-83 (.644). In her first nine seasons at UCLA, Sampras Webster guided the Bruins to eight top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including five top-5 showings (1997, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004). In 2004, she led UCLA to the NCAA Finals for the first time since 1991. It also marked the first time since 1991 that the Bruins surpassed the 20-win mark, finishing with a 21-8 overall record.
