Junior Katie Arnold led the Bruin swim and dive team on day one of the SMU Invitational in Dallas, TX, winning the 100 Back (55.20) and 100 Fly (54.94). As a team, the Bruins had an athlete in every single event championship.
Senior Kim Vandenberg also had a good day in the pool, finishing day one with a second-place finish in the 200 Free (1:50.52). Freshman Anna Poteete also posted a second-place finish in her first collegiate invitaional, swimming 23.55 in the 50 Free. Sophomore Nicolette Teo and Jeana Fuccillo each posted fourth-place finishes with Teo swimming 1:03.98 in the 100 Breast and Fuccillo swimming 4:22.73 in the 400 IM.
Several Bruins competed in console finals on Friday - junior Katie Nelson placed eighth in the 400 IM (4:25.82); sophomore Shannon Hackett finished ninth in the 200 Free (1:51.93); junior Amy Thurman placed 11th in the 100 Fly (57.73) and seventh in the 50 Free (23.76); Poteete placed ninth in the 100 Back (58.56); Fuccillo was ninth in the 100 Breast (1:04.37).
In relay action, the 400 Medley Relay team of Arnold, Teo, Vandenberg and Poteete placed second (3:43.18), while the 800 Free Relay team of Nelson, Hackett, Vandenberg and Teo finished third (7:28.33).
In diving action, junior Sara Clark placed fifth on the one-meter with a socre of 215.85.
Day two action of the SMU Invite will begin at 7:30 pm on Saturday, Oct. 22.
